Work Visa issues will now be eased by India and Maldives through bilateral talks. Both the nations have started the Consular talks for resolving issues faced by Indian immigrant workers in the Maldives. This is the second round of talks after the change in Government in the Maldives this year In October.
The bilateral ties between India and Maldives faced a downturn in the recent past. This was during the government headed by Abdulla Yameen in the Maldives. The then Government had denied visas to thousands of Indians. These had applied for Work Visas in Maldivian companies.
Abdulla Shahid the Foreign Minister of Maldives said that there are thousands of Indian citizens in the Maldives. The nation and its economy enjoy their contribution. The Work Visa issues faced by them will be resolved, he added. He was speaking at the beginning of the second round of Consular level talks in Male, as quoted by the Sputnik News.
2000 plus Indian job holders failed to obtain the Work Visas during the preceding Government rule in the Maldives. They are likely to be the first group to benefit from the talks for resolving Work Visa issues. The second group would be military personnel of India at Laamu and Addu atolls. They are also likely to get relief from the visa concerns.
The Foreign Minister of Maldives added that the discussion will also focus on resolving issues faced by Maldivian citizens in India. This is with a specific focus on issues related to visas, he added. It is likely that the two nations will sign a fresh Visa deal during the visit of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih to India.
The first round of Consular Talks between Maldives and India was held at New Delhi.
