Jordan’s Ministry of Labour has issued new regulations along with some visa changes. Among other changes, the country has created a new Work Permit for high-skilled foreign workers.

Who must apply for the skilled Work Permit?

When no local Jordanian can fill in a job available on the labour market, the job can be offered to a skilled foreign worker. Such a skilled foreign worker needs to apply for the skilled Work Permit.

You can apply for the skilled Work Permit if there are not enough local workers with skills which are high in demand. The Jordan Govt. will soon release a list of shortage occupations.

You may also apply for the skilled Work Permit if you have rare knowledge and expertise that can be transferred to the labour market of Jordan.

The skilled Work Permit is also granted if hiring foreign workers increases job opportunities for local Jordanians by boosting the economy.

What is the validity of the Work Permit?

The validity of the skilled Work Permit is one year. You may also renew the Work Permit at the end of its validity.

What is the visa fee?

The visa fee for the new skilled Work Permit is JOD 2,500. The visa fee is considerably higher than other Work Permits which cost around JOD 500. Work Permits available in free zones cost about JOD 275 per permit.

Additional information

The Jordan Govt. has not yet clarified the requirements for an employer to hire foreign workers for skilled jobs. The Govt. has also not released the list of occupations that are high in demand. It is also not clear whether the new rules will apply to pending Work Permit applications.

Overseas workers who do not work in a “skilled” job may still apply for a normal Work Permit. Such Work Permits do not require proof of in-demand skills, rare knowledge or other special requirements.

A fine of 5% on the visa fee will be levied on employers who fail to renew the Work Permit within ninety days of the expiry date of the Work Permit.
