The US and Turkey have jointly suspended visa services in each other’s nations in intensifying diplomatic row sparked off by the detention of Turkish staffer in Istanbul US mission. US Embassy in Ankara said that latest developments have forced the government to reconfirm commitment of Turkey to security of personnel and US mission services in the nation.
For reducing the numbers of travelers’ during the assessment all non-immigrant visa services are suspended at all US missions in Turkey, it said. Travelers to the US for provisional work or study, business, medical treatment, and tourism are offered non-immigrant visas. Immigrant visa services are exclusively for those who seek to reside permanently in the US, as quoted by the Indian Express.
In response to the suspension of all visa services by the US, Turkey reacted by suspending all visa services for US nationals in the US. It added that the measures are applicable equally to visas issued at the border and online.
Turkey said that the concerns over the commitment of the US to the security of personnel and Turkish missions necessitated the decision for restrictions. However the fact that it is applicable only to US nationals and inclusive of visas offered both at borders and online imply that the move is retaliatory than based on security.
The US Embassy said that it is intensely disturbed regarding the detention and turned down the allegations against the staff as completely baseless. It also criticized the leaks in the local media from the sources in the government of Turkey. This is aimed at the trial of the staff in the media and the not court of law, said the Embassy.
It is extremely unusual to suspend accepting applications and offering all normal visas.
