As the Trump Govt. looks to tighten immigration rules, Indians in the US are rushing towards the costly EB5 Visa. That’s because the EB5 Visa has a faster route to the much-coveted Green Card of the US.
The Trump Govt. plans to introduce a work ban on H4 Visa holders. The H4 Visa is given to dependent family members of an H1B Visa holder. The H4 EAD gave certain H4 Visa holders the right to work legally in the US. This new visa reform has caused even more Indians to gravitate towards the EB5 Visa even though it is very expensive. The investment amount for the EB5 Visa is all set to increase from $500,000 to $900,000 in November this year.
As the H1B Visa rules got stricter, the EB5 Visa route became the fastest way for Indians in the US to gain the Green Card. At least for those who could afford it.
It is surprising that many H4 Visa holders are applying for the EB5 Visa which was earlier unheard of. Experts believe it is the fear of losing a paycheck that is driving them towards the EB5 Visa.
The H4 Visa became an attractive option after the Obama Govt. introduced work rights in 2015. More than 85,000 women benefited from this move.
However, that is all set to end with the Trump Govt. revoking the work rights. This will cause double-income families to become single-income families.
The current wait time for some H1B Visa holders for a Green Card is over 15 years.
With the investment amount being hiked in November, Experts believe that there will be a huge rush for the EB5 Visa. This may add to the wait times for Green Cards through the EB5 route too.
India crossed the country-cap of 700 visa places for EB5 Visas in July 2019. Increased number of applications has created a backlog dating back to 2015.
Experts believe that could cause the current wait time of 2 to 3 years for a Green Card to increase to 8 to 9 years.
However, that does not seem to deter Indians at all.
