Donald Trump hailing the merit-based immigration system Donald Trump, the US President, on 28 February hailing the merit-based immigration system, which is being followed by Australia Canada and many other countries, asked America to adopt it, stating that it would help the country save a lot of money, hike workers’ salaries and aid underprivileged families. This system would allow immigrants to be chosen on the basis of their merit and skills. During his first address to Congress, Trump was quoted by CNBC as saying that it was imperative for those wanting to enter the US to be able to sustain themselves financially there. He said that despite this, America was not implementing this rule, taxing the public resources on which its poorest citizens really depend upon. The President cited the National Academy of Sciences study to say that the current immigration of the US is costing its taxpayers many billion dollars per year. Trump was said to have expressed interest in the merit-based immigration system of Canada when he met Justin Trudeau, Canadian Prime Minister, in mid-February. He said that they should switch over from the current system of allowing migrants with low skills to follow a merit-based system, benefits of which are manifold. Citing Abraham Lincoln, Trump said that he was right and America needed to follow his words. At the same time, he said that he was not going to let the US, its world-class companies and labour force be exploited any more. Saying he would bring back millions of jobs to America, he said that defending its workforce entails overhauling its legal immigration system. Trump felt that the current system, which was antediluvian, was shrinking the earnings of its lowest-paid workers and straining taxpayers.
