Cutting across party lines 130 US Lawmakers have expressed support for Work Visas for spouses of H-1B visa holders. Led by Pramila Jayapal the Indian-American Congresswoman, they have urged the US administration to continue offering EAD or work authorization. EAD is offered to specific dependent spouses of H-1B visa holder non-immigrants.
The US administration led by Trump is planning to rescind the rule passed in the Obama era permitting H-1B visa holder spouses to work lawfully in the US. This could have a devastating effect on 70,000 plus H-4 Visa holders.
The US Lawmakers have submitted the letter to Kirstjen Nielsen the Homeland Security Secretary. It has been furnished just weeks ahead of June deadline when the administration plans to rescind the EADs.
The letter elaborates that the EAD offers an opportunity to H-4 Visa holders to work in the US and strengthen the economy. It also offers economic support and relief to 1000s of spouses majority of whom are women residing in the US for several years now, as quoted by the Times of India.
Several of the H-4 visa holders with EAD are on their pathway to Green Cards. Eliminating the rule will damage the competitiveness of the US economy and employers. It will also devastate the spouses with H-4 visas and their families. It is strongly urged by us to reconsider the move to rescind EAD, adds the letter signed by 130 US lawmakers from the Democratic and Republican party.
93% of the H-4 visa holders residing in the US with EAD are from India as per the latest report of the US Congress. The lawmakers added that most of the H-4 visa spouses are women. Rescinding EAD will enhance the gender disparity gap.
