The US Dream is fading away from overseas students even as Canada is actively attracting them with fresh initiatives and programs. The US administration under Trump is now enforcing rules that were a part of the law for 6 decades but never implemented.
Canada has recently launched the SDS - Student Direct Stream for students from India, Vietnam, China and the Philippines. This program is in collaboration with one of the leading monetary organization in Canada the Scotia Bank. The SB will offer eligible students a chance to purchase a GIC - Guaranteed Investment Certificate worth 10,000$. It will cover 1-year expenses of the students as well as cater to the SDS program requirements.
All the Institutions and Colleges in Canada with DLI number are covered under the SDS program. It will fast-track the Canada Study Visa for overseas students under the program including India.
The purpose of launching SDS is to offer good quality education to the most eligible and deserving students.
Meanwhile, the Trump administration issued a tough Policy Memo with regards to something called as ‘Unlawful Presence’. It is a fearful term with severe consequences, as quoted by the Hindu Businessline.
With effect from 8 August 2018, students engaged in violations for more than 3 months will be deemed to have stayed unlawfully in the US. They can be issued an NTA- Notice to Appear, which is the first step for proceedings for deportation.
If a Judge concurs, the penalty will be disastrous for the student. He/she will be barred from arriving in the US for 10 years.
The situation for OPT STEM students was also made tougher in April this year by the US administration. It said that the overseas students will no longer be permitted to work for 3rd party placement firms, also known as consultants.
