A report says that US citizenship applicants have to wait much longer than they were supposed to.
As per the Colorado State Advisory Committee, there is a backlog of more than 700,000 citizenship applications. University of Colorado Experts believes that this backlog could potentially affect civil rights.
Ming Hsu Chen, Law Professor, said that naturalization is an important step in the US. To not be able to become a naturalized citizen could negatively affect
-voting rights
-civil rights and
- the democratic process
Students and professors of the University of Colorado Law School contributed to the report. The report found that the wait time at the immigration office in Denver is around 10 months. However, the process should legally take only about 120 days. The national average has increased from 5.6 months in 2016 to 10.1 months at present.
As per the report, the increase in wait times can be attributed to increased requests for evidence after naturalization interviews and policy changes. A recent US move turns away immigrants who depend on public assistance.
Federal Agencies in the US are making it harder to gain citizenship in a bid to crackdown unlawful immigration. As per The Cato Institute, the number of citizenship application rejections have increased under the Trump Govt, as quoted by the Gazette. 2017 saw 11% of all citizenship applicants being denied.
