Universities in the UK have re-launched a campaign in support of overseas students. The campaign ‘#weareineternational’ was launched in 2013 commemorating the positive influence of overseas students in the UK and has been again launched now at an event in the UK Parliament.
The UK universities have revived this campaign in support of international students as they intend to garner support from the public to pressurize the UK government to change its policies for overseas students. The campaign highlights the financial advantages to the UK economy through the contribution of the overseas students to the education sector and the local job markets. It also seeks to outline the position that should be given to them in accentuating the future industrial growth of the UK, as quoted by The Hindu.
In the wake of the reduced majority of the Theresa May led UK government, the campaigners are quite confident that it will be possible to change the scenario in the UK for overseas students. They are specifically focusing regarding exclusion of overseas students from the net immigrant numbers to the UK.
Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield University Sir Keith Burnett said that it is very crucial to highlight the practical and crucial contributions of the overseas students to the UK economy. Immigration has emerged as an international issue. There are only two options either a nation can remain open and become powerful, capable society or remain close and hinder the capabilities, added Sir Keith Burnett.
The Vice-Chancellor of Sheffield University further elaborated that contributions of the international students must be highlighted especially in the backdrop of Brexit. He approximated that around 20 million pounds in the net were contributed by 14,000 global students to Sheffield by generating around 10,000 jobs.
