Theresa May must give up the unrealistic immigration targets of reducing the intake of immigrants to the UK, said Ruth Davidson. Speaking at Glasgow, the Scotland Conservative leader said that the immigration targets for reduction were never realized. This also does not cater to the requirements of the UK, she added.

Davidson said that the UK must attract fresh immigrants if it has to strengthen its economy. She also urged that Theresa May must give priority to NHS rather than tax cuts, as quoted by the BBC.

At the beginning of the coalition government in 2015, David Cameron had set the immigration targets of reducing the intake by 10s of 1000s. This goal has never been realized as the net annual immigration to the UK stands at around 240,000. The UK Home Office has meanwhile argued that UK public favors reducing immigration.

Ms. Davidson elaborated that she intends to alter the negative views about immigration. This is a sign that her stature in the Conservative Party and confidence is increasing. The views that immigration is an issue needs to be transformed, she added. The Tories have been already warned by her that the party must be more liberal and open in its outlook to win votes of the youth.

Addressing the audience at the University of Glasgow, Ruth Davidson said that we must have the self-belief in recognizing the value of overseas immigrants. Their inclination to arrive in the UK is a sign of our successful prosperous and vibrant culture she added.

Ruth Davidson also highlighted the positive influence of immigrants on the financial aspects. We need the immigrants to build a strong UK economy, she emphasized.
