UAE Visa amnesty commenced in August 2018. Over 30,000 people have come forward to adjust their legal status in the UAE since then. Now it has been extended to December 1. The amnesty allows people who entered the country illegally to modify their status without fear of imprisonment. They can either return home or extend their stay.
Indian embassy has issued over 1,800 short validity passports in the last three months. This passport allows residents to return home and apply for a permanent one. It has also processed 3,140 passport renewals. These apply to people with an offer of immediate employment. Nearly 2,308 exit passes have been paid for by the UAE government till date.
People whose Visas have expired have been given a grace period until December 1. They should either modify their status or leave the country without penalty. The extension of the deadline has caused the Immigrants to breathe easy. They can clear debts before returning home. Also, it has prevented the break-up of many families due to not having travel visas in place.
Pia is a Filipina who has lived in the country for 30 years. Her company recently went bust owing her months of unpaid salary. When she came forward under the UAE Visa amnesty, they said her Visa had expired 4 months ago. She added that she had been catering for friends' events. That was the only thing she could do for her family.
As quoted by The National, Pia went to the court to recoup the money but that was unsuccessful. Her family is now under huge debts. However, this extension has given them a chance to clear all the bank debts. She further added that they are planning to go back to Manila. The flight tickets will be paid for by the Philippine Government.
Paul Cortes, the Philippines General Consul, is coordinating with the UAE Visa amnesty officials. They are helping hundreds of people who want to avail of this opportunity. He added that some people are pawning their passports in exchange for money. This is causing bigger issues now. He has advised Immigrants to refrain from such action.
Mr. Cortes further added that outstanding rental issues are proving to be difficult to resolve. Fines are being lowered. However, Immigrants should hasten to modify their status at the earliest. There is less than a month left. They should take their documents to the UAE Government before the UAE Visa amnesty initiative expires.
