Travel Insurance

Most of us plan our vacation meticulously from where to eat our meals to where to take the perfect photos. We tend to take care of the minutest details when we travel abroad for work. We efficiently plan everything-flight bookings, hotel bookings, visa application and transport.

We seem to plan everything. Everything except Travel Insurance.

Most people travelling abroad do not understand what Travel Insurance is and why is it needed.

When travelling abroad, several things can go wrong. Some common problems that travellers face often are:

  • Flight cancellations
  • Property loss
  • Accident
  • Sudden illness

Travel Insurance can go a long way in covering your unexpected expenditures or accidents.

While travelling abroad, you have the option of taking long-term insurance or a short one which covers only the duration of your trip. Many countries, in fact, include Travel Insurance as a mandatory part of your visa application. For instance, when travelling to the Schengen Area, it is mandatory to obtain Travel Insurance. Same is the case with the UAE, the US, and Turkey. Some countries may even ask you to buy Travel Insurance locally. However, in such cases, the premiums are quite high. So it is best to go prepared.

It is highly advisable that you sort out your Travel Insurance at the time of paying for your trip. In that case, even if your trip is cancelled, you still end up getting some compensation.

There are different types of Travel Insurance. Generic Travel Insurance may provide 24-hour assistance and emergency help. You also have specialized Travel Insurance for expats, business travellers and athletes.

If you are going on a short trip abroad, Travel Insurance that covers medical emergencies, theft, accidents and loss may be enough. After all, it is always better to be safe than sorry.
