The Home Secretary of Britain Mrs Theresa May feels that the free movement opportunity given to the immigrants from the European Union, is being misused by them. She clarified that, free movement means the movement from jobs and not the freedom to claim benefits. Mrs May has observed that there has been a drastic increase in the number of people entering Britain without a confirmed job.
Understanding the official figures
The increase in the number of immigrants from the European Union has gone beyond the decided target and reached up to 330,000 people every year. It was further pointed out that as many as 63,000 people came to Britain last year, without a job confirmation. However, these figures have been questioned as they contradict with the figures of the British government.
According to the British government the number of people coming in from the European Union is 250,000. These are the people who go on a look out for jobs after reaching the United Kingdom. May has asked the government to treat this situation as a wake up because it is causing a lot of people to put their lives at a risk to reach the United Kingdom and look for jobs.
The suggestions given by Mrs May
Mrs May is urging the government to reduce the number of immigrants and not feel threatened by the reduction. She says that they cannot simply put the blame on other parts of the world and ignore the problem. She advices the British government to play its role in this reduction process. To handle this in a better way, big decisions need to be taken she says. Similar is the situation in countries like Italy and Greece who are struggle to take care of the unprecedented growth in the number of immigrants. Macedonia on the other hand has declared state emergency as an answer to this situation.
