The UK Prime Minister Theresa May gave indications that she will spell out the EU exit bill amount at the Brussels summit scheduled next week. A spokesperson for the UK PM said that more details will be spelled out at the summit. May had assured last month that the UK will honor the monetary obligations towards the EU for the exit, as quoted by the Indian Express.
EU leaders are squabbling over a goodwill gesture for the UK that is anticipated to break the deadlock in Brexit talks over the EU exit bill amount.
Germany is leading the tough stand cautious of the proposal by Donald Tusk the summit chair. It says that EU will begin its internal work for the transition plan after UK’s exit notwithstanding the failure on the part of Theresa May to spell out the EU exit bill amount for the divorce settlement.
A Senior EU diplomat said that this will be a very big gesture towards the UK, perhaps way too bigger. The meeting of envoys from 27 EU states has been scheduled to deliberate on the draft statement to be made by Tusk after the leaders gather next week.
A spokesperson for Angela Merkel the German Chancellor warned that time is running out after the failure in breaking the deadlock in the Brexit talks. Moreover, the internal squabble in the UK government headed by May have given rise to fears that talks would collapse. This will leave the UK in a legal limbo when it exits the EU in March 2019.
Businesses are demanding clarity by the beginning of 2018 as to how the exit will exactly look like so as to plan investment decisions.
