The Government of Australia and more than 1,900 immigrants who were suing it over their treatment at the Papua New Guinea’s immigration camp have reached a settlement amongst them.
The Government of Australia does not accept immigrants who arrive at the nation by boat. It instead gives financial assistance to Papua New Guinea and Nauru the islands in Pacific to keep these refugees who arrive in hundreds of numbers from Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
The immigrants who had sought refuge in Australia had sued the Government of Australia for false detention and sought monetary compensation for the psychological and physical injuries that were incurred by them owing to the conditions prevailing at Manus Island, claimed their legal representative.
The Supreme Court at Victoria was scheduled to begin today the trial for 1, 905 erstwhile or current refugees of the Papua New Guinea’s Manus Island. David Curtain the legal representative for the refugees informed that the Supreme Court that the suing Immigrants and Australian government had arrived at a settlement.
The exact nature and details of the settlement were not available. Peter Dutton the Immigration Minister of Australia did not respond immediately for his reaction to this development, as quoted by the Indian Express.
It is being considered by the US to resettle 1, 250 refugees from Nauru and Manus Island as a part of the pact arrived between the US administration under Barak Obama and the Government of Australia.
