David Davis has said that the UK looks forward to securing a fresh, special and deep partnership with the EU. The UK Brexit Secretary added that the exit talks must prove to be fruitful for both the nationals of the UK and the EU. Prior to meeting the Chief negotiator for the EU Michel Barnier at the Berlaymont headquarters, Davis said that he was optimistic of a constructive and positive focus of the talks and added that more factors unite the UK and the EU than dividing them, as quoted by the Indian Express.
The statements of David Davis have conveyed the message to EU officials that the government led by Theresa May could be finally agreeing to the tone of the negotiations as perceived by the EU.
The electoral debacle of Theresa May in the snap general elections has once again divided the Tories amongst themselves regarding the nature of the Brexit. It was attempted by David Cameroon to put an end to this internal division of the Tories by calling for the referendum in 2016.
On one hand, the camp for hard Brexit led by David Davis is supporting complete severing of ties with the EU that includes EU customs union and the single market. On the other hand, the group for softer Brexit led by Tories such as Finance Minister of the Philip Hammond is supporting Brexit that retains close ties with the EU including customs union.
With more than one million UK nationals residing in the EU, Theresa May is also keen on securing a deal for the rights of the British nationals while the point of divergence for the EU and the UK is very vast.
