Sajid Javid a South Asian has become the UK Home Secretary for the first time even as the government aims to contain an escalating crisis over tough immigration policies. It has also come under fire over the treatment of Commonwealth nationals.
The son of a bus driver who immigrated to the UK from Pakistan, Sajid Javid is the former MD of Deutsche Bank and banker. He became a Member of Parliament in the UK in 2009 and became a Cabinet Minister in 2014.
Since 2016, Javid has been the Local Government and Communities In-charge Minister. He was retained in the Cabinet notwithstanding his obvious pro-EU stand during the referendum for Brexit.
Sajid Javid also becomes the first South Asian to lead one of the ‘Great State offices’. This is a name given to the 4 most senior positions in the UK Government. It also includes the Prime Minister, Head of Treasury, and the Foreign Office Head, as quoted by the Hindu.
The no-nonsense approach that Sajid brought to the government owing to his banking experience won him applause. On the other hand, he faced criticism for his handling of the Grenfell Tower tragedy outcome.
An alternate approach to conservative politics has been presented by Javid on certain occasions. His first reaction to the Windrush scandal was that it could have affected his own family as well. This could be his parents, his relatives or even himself, added the former banker.
Member of Parliament from the Labor Party Diane Abbott has said that the first priority for Javid must be to end the hostile ambiance for immigrants. The new UK Home Secretary will not make any difference unless the hostile immigration policy of May is ended added Abbott.
