Qatar has announced that Qatari citizens visiting Iran are now eligible for visa on arrival. The announcement was also updated on the Foreign Ministry website of Qatar.
Qatar is home to a sizeable population of Shia Muslims. These Muslims like to visit Iran to pay homage to the many holy shrines present in the country. They also take the Iran route to visit Iraq during the Arba’een period. During this period, huge processions are held to commemorate 40 days after the martyrdom anniversary. These processions are held in Karbala where the Imam Hussein shrine is located.
Qatar had faced a blockade from UAE, Saudi Arabia and Bahrain over a diplomatic issue in the past. The visa on arrival service of Iran comes two years after the blockade.
The visa on arrival offer could help boost ties between Iran and Qatar. This could prove to be a vital economic lifeline for Qatar during the blockade.
Qatar and Iran, recently, launched a new shipping route between Doha and Bushehr, the port city in southern Iran. The new shipping route will carry both passengers and cargo. It will be operational once a week. This announcement was made on 25th August by Siavash ArjMandzadeh, MD of Ports and Maritime Dept. of Bushehr, as per Tehran Times.
Mr Arjmandzadeh further announced that passengers could avail 4 to 5 days tour costing $200 to $500. The tour could take between 12 and 20 hours depending on ship speed and weather conditions.
