The Punjab Employment Generation Dept. will soon take on the responsibility of a recruitment agency to help young people go abroad. The Dept. will also have a special cell for students who want to study abroad.

The Govt. had been receiving complaints regularly regarding fraud committed by travel agents. To address the issue, Punjab paid a fee of Rs. 50 lakh to the Union Govt. to register the department as an agent to send young people abroad.  This was confirmed by Charanjeet Singh Channi, Minister of Employment Generation, Punjab.

An official from the dept. said that other states like Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are already sending youth abroad for work. Mr Channi said that several youths aspire to go abroad for work and studies. Very often they end up being duped by fraudulent travel agents. The Govt. has received several complaints regarding the same. To put an end to this, the Punjab Govt. has decided to step into the picture themselves.

Mr Channi also said that the special cell for study abroad will also have tie-ups with foreign universities. This will help students financially as the Govt. will return the commission which the foreign universities pay, to the students. Plus, students will also not fall into the hands of fraud agents. Mr Channi pointed out that students pay around Rs 14 lakh to study abroad. Agents pocket about 30% of it as commission. The Punjab Govt. will give the commission back to the students which will help them save Rs. 3 to 4 lakhs.

The Minister said that every year 60,000 to 1 lakh youth go abroad to work or study. The Govt. will tie-up with foreign Universities which will help students study at an affordable cost. Foreign Universities will be thoroughly vetted before their names are put up on the Govt. website. Mr Channi also said that the Punjab Govt. will also set up a call-centre to help unemployed youth in the state. The call-centre will have at least 100 people working in it, as per NDTV. The Govt. will also hold Job Fairs from 9th to 30th September. The fairs would offer around 2.10 lakh jobs under the Ghar-Ghar Rozgar scheme.
