US J1 Visa program for Ireland is over 5 decades old, as quoted by the Careers Portal IE. Till date, 160, 000 students from Ireland have spent their summers in the US through this program. This program functions through collaboration between agencies sponsoring Summer Work and Travel visa and the US Department of State and Embassy. It has been ensured that Ireland receives 7,000 visa slots in 2018 which is the same as in 2017.
Participants are now being urged by the US Embassy to submit their US J1 Visa applications at the earliest. This is to ensure that they have adequate time to secure a job before arriving in the US.
All third level and full-time students are eligible to apply for the Summer Work and Travel J1 program. It permits the students to work in the US in summer and extra 30 days for travel. It is mandatory from 2016 for students from Ireland to secure a job before arriving in the US through the Summer Work and Travel program.
A designated visa sponsor must accept the participants of the J1 program into an exchange visitor program. World Wide Cultural Exchange, J-1 Ireland, USIT and SAYIT are the major sponsors of this program.
