Ontario is asking the Federal Canadian Govt. to double its immigration intake to deal with a skilled labour shortage.
Vic Fedeli, Minister for Economic Development, said that expanding the Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program will help the province address its labour needs.
Mr Fedeli submitted a written request to the new Immigration Minister of Canada, Mr Marco Mendicino. In the letter, Mr Fedeli requested that the number of visa places under the OINP should be increased from 7,000 to 13,300 in two years.
Mr Fedeli also said that he had requested the Federal Govt. for an additional 1,000 visa places this year. However, only 50 were approved.
He also said that the OINP already has more applications than the number of available visa places.
A spokesperson for the Immigration Ministry said that the Canadian Govt. is committed to increasing the number of visa places for PNPs by 27,000. This will give the provinces the autonomy to select economic immigrants as per their own labour market needs.
The spokesperson further said that Canada had launched the Rural and Northern Immigration Pilot. This new pilot will help the regional and rural areas attract and retain skilled workers to address some of the demographic challenges that these areas face. It will also help communities in these areas seek out talent that will help the local economy grow.
