The government of Ontario will soon present legislation that, if accepted, would make it Canada’s first province to hire larger numbers of internationally trained immigrants in the sectors they have been educated in by disallowing the use of work experience in Canada as a prerequisite in its job postings.
The province hopes that this change will help more eligible workers get hired. If enforced, the legislation will be revolutionary, barring standardized professions from needing biased Canadian work experience obligations to permit over 30 occupations, effective December 2023.
Ontario is the province that welcomes the highest number of Canadian immigrants each year. This province is expected to invest CAD 100 million in services in 2023-24 that help new arrivals in Canada learn English or French, which will help them settle, obtain training, and secure jobs.
The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) is Ontario’s economic immigration program. It partners with the Canadian government through Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC).
This will help international workers, students, and others with the proper education, skills, and work experience to apply for the OINP nomination.
After the OINP acknowledges and nominates qualified candidates for Canadian permanent residence (PR) who can meet the economic needs of Ontario, the Canadian government will finally decide to approve PR applications.
There are more than 900 programs that colleges offer across Ontario that grant an Ontario College Graduate Certificate, which mostly are one-year programs.
In 2023, nominated by Ontario will be 16,500 immigrants for PR through the OINP in several crucial sectors, like skilled occupations and healthcare.
Ontario has also told the Canadian federal government that it should have more authority in selecting economic immigrants who will enter the province.
