New Zealand needs 1000 immigrant caregivers every year according to the CEO of New Zealand Aged Care Association Simon Wallace. The New Zealand government is tweaking migration policy to take immigrants workers to deliver 100,000 homes for the citizens. But it is neglecting the responsibility to provide caregivers to the older citizens, added Wallace.
Simon Wallace said that it is a well-known fact that 1000 immigrant caregivers are needed every year. The aged residential care is facing a huge challenge to recruit adequate workers to cater to the demand. This sector is reliant on a valuable immigrant workers pool to cater to the skill shortages, added the CEO.
The required workforce for aged Kiwis is under trouble owing to the existing policies for their migration. It has already been predicted that there is going to be a rise in the older population of New Zealand, as quoted by the NZ Herald Co NZ.
New Zealand requires policies that will facilitate residential care providers for the aged to retain and recruit the valuable immigrant workers. The current policies stipulate that immigrant caregivers must return to their nations within a time of 3 years. This is just ridiculous given the scarcity of caregivers, said Wallace.
The current immigration policies for immigrant caregivers will result in unwarranted stress for the aged people. These actually require security and stability of faithful relationships with the caregivers, added the New Zealand Aged Care Association CEO.
The caregivers can earn up to 50,000$ annually in New Zealand. Whereas, in other jobs that are classified as level 3, they earn as less as 41,000$ and yet have a pathway to NZ PR. This is unfair, said Wallace. The former government last year had valued the caregiver workforce at 2 billion$. It had offered well-deserved hike in pay with settlement pay equity.
