The N&L Province Canada, or Newfoundland & Labrador, needs at least 4,000 immigrants annually and the same numbers are being planned for the target. This was revealed by the Federal Minister Seamus O’Regan. He serves as the Minister of Veterans Affairs in Canada.
Seamus O’Regan said that he has received consent from Ahmed Hussen the Immigration Minister of Canada. The current immigration target for N&L Province Canada is 1,700 immigrants annually. This will be increased to 4,000 by 2020 added the Minister.
Addressing a meeting this week at the St. John’s Board of Trade O’Regan said that the government is ready to achieve the new target of 4,000 immigrants annually. The combination of aging population and outmigration is at an incredible pace. Thus 4,000 new immigrants per year are the baseline now.
The baseline of 4,000 fresh immigrants is needed to just maintain the status quo said Seamus O’Regan. But that is not my interest, he added. It is my aim to grow the economy of the N&L Province Canada, added the Minister. Increased prosperity, higher profits, and more jobs mean we need more immigrants, added O’Regan.
It is projected by the Newfoundland and Labrador government that the province will witness a decline of 10% in its population of working age by 2025. This will mean 35, 000 lesser people in the labor market of the province, as quoted by the CIC News.
The province has been accepting a steady number of immigrants that is increasing over the years. It reached 1,700 immigrants in 2017 from 546 in 2007. O’ Regan said that he plans to assemble the stakeholders from the government, business and labor in the province to explore ways of realizing this target for immigrants.
