The New Zealand government recently announced the reinstallation of its Parent Visa category program to ensure that businesses do not run short of skilled workers,
Now, skilled migrants will be able to bring their parents to the country. The parents need not provide proof that they have a guaranteed lifetime income. The focus has now shifted on the ability of their skilled migrant children to support them.
This move will help companies in New Zealand find the required skilled labor. The immigration minister of New Zealand Iain Lees-Galloway said that the Parent Category option will be open from February 2020.
The move to reinstate the Parent Category criteria will motivate highly skilled migrants to come to the country because their parents can join them. It will ensure support for parents by their children once they come here.
Under the new Parent Category visa settings, the focus will be on the migrant’s income instead of the financial position of the parents. This will be in line with the ‘highly-paid’ settings under the Skilled Migrant category and the recent changes made to the Temporary Work visa scheme.
Under the new rules a parent can gain residence without the need to provide proof of having a guaranteed lifetime income or settlement funds. But parents must still meet the character and health requirements when applying for a visa.
