The new rules for Australian Citizenship risk creating an underclass of immigrants according to Tony Burke the Frontbencher of the Labor Party. These will neither be required to pledge loyalty to Australia nor will be told that they belong to the nation, added Burke.
Burke elaborated by saying that the fresh requirements for the English language will face huge hostility from the ethnic communities than compared even with the efforts to amend Racial Discrimination Act section 18C. He said that even many Australian nationals will not be able to clear the university level test.
The Citizenship Spokesperson of the Labor party Tony Burke added that exemptions to nationals of the US, New Zealand, Canada, and the UK could imply that these are racially motivated. The changes to Australian Citizenship have been referred by the Labor Party to the Senate Committee, as quoted by The Australian.
Labor Party has also given indications that it is open to approving specific measures individually. But the government will have to bifurcate these from requirements such as holding Australia PR for 4 years prior to applying for Australian citizenship and requirements for the English language.
Mr. Burke was quoted by the Sky News as saying that the level of opposition to the changes to the Australian citizenship was more than when compared to the movement for racial hate speech of 18C.
In the initial level, the argument of the Immigration Minister Peter Dutton sounds reasonable, said Tony Burke. But the competent level of English being referred by Dutton means that level 6 on the IELTS. This level of English is demanded from international students seeking admission to universities in Australia, explained Burke.
