White House

The White House has said that the US Economy needs merit-based migration as the inflow of lowly skilled migrants to the US has suppressed the salaries. These have also harmed the US workers and overwrought the treasury resources added the White House.

The statement from White House favoring merit-based migration for the US Economy has come one day after Donald Trump gave a call for it. This kind of immigration system based on merit will benefit the Indian professionals.

Nations such as Australia and Canada have an immigration system based on merit. This is beneficial to both host nations and the immigrants added the statement. In his first address for the State of the Union, Trump has demanded an immigration policy to attract the brightest and the best to the US.

A recent poll by the Harvard-Harris was quoted by the White House in its press statement. It elaborates that 79% of the poll participants said that the immigration system must be based on the ability of the immigrants to contribute to the US economy. This must be measured by the skills and education of the immigrants, adds the poll, as quoted by the NDTV.

It has also been insisted by the White House that it is high time that immigration policies of the US are reformed. This must give chance to those immigrants who have skills and talents and not for those with close family ties.

The White House further explained that the existing migration system in the US allows one immigrant to sponsor multiple relatives to settle as legal PR holders. These are even beyond their nuclear family, it added.

Around 70% or 2/3rds of the legal migration to the US is based on family ties to the US Visa or Green card holder. 9.3 million Migrants were admitted to the US between 2005 and 2015 based on relations of family, said the White House.
