Portugal’s D3 High-Qualified Worker Visa

 

According to the recent global mobility company HAYMAN-WOODWARD survey, Portugal has a strong technology industry is becoming a global technology hub. Portugal aims to attract more professionals and companies to the country. Portugal’s D3 visa attracts highly qualified professionals from Switzerland, non-European Union, and European Economic Area countries.

 

Vanessa Mororó, a HAYMAN-WOODWARD immigration lawyer in Portugal, explains that requests for D3 visas increase due to the high average salary, mainly for qualified IT professionals, making Portugal attractive to Brazilians looking for better financial conditions. Similarly, obtaining residence visas became more attractive after implementing the CPLP (Community of Portuguese-speaking Countries) Mobility Agreement.

The following professions were the most sought-after for obtaining a Portuguese D3 visa:

  • Civil engineers
  • Production engineers
  • Statisticians
  • Actuaries
  • Doctors
  • Economists
  • Administrators in senior management

D3 visa processing time

According to the survey, Individuals planning to apply for a D3 visa should know that the longest wait is not for the visa processing in their home country but rather for converting the residence permit once they are in Portugal.

 

Mororó also said that the D3 visa has a special processing time of 30 days. However, this figure may be exceeded and vary based on the location and time of year the request is made. The D3 visa can be applied in the country of origin where the applicant has legal residence.

 

To benefit from a D3 visa, People applying for a D3 visa must hold a valid Employment Contract.

 

Validity of Portugal's D3 visa

 

The validity of Portugal’s D3 High-Qualified Worker visa is four months. After entering Portugal, the holders should convert the D3 visa into a temporary residence permit within four months, with the first temporary residence permit valid for two years and the second for three years. After five years of legal residence, the applicant can apply for Portuguese nationality.
