The majority of MEPs (Members of European Parliament) said on 14 December that the EU Commission must abide by EU law and reintroduce temporarily visa requirements for US nationals in order to urge America to grant visa-free access to the North American country to all EU countries’ citizens.
In a press release released by the European Parliament, they concurred that it was a matter of principle and underlined that EU rules mandate the Commission to pass a delegated act to revoke the waiver of EU visas if the country to which it was issued did not entirely reciprocate in the same manner to all EU citizens.
Meanwhile, Dimitris Avramopoulos, the European Commissioner, emphasised that though the Commission has a legal duty to act in cases of lack of visa reciprocity, it must factor in the consequences its decisions may lead to. He told MEPs that if visa requirements are reintroduced for US citizens, it could result in retaliation, leading to a decline in the number of visitors and subsequent financial as well as job losses in the tourism sector.
According to EU, America has visa restrictions in place for Croatians, Cypriots, Romanians, Polish and Bulgarians.
