Theresa May’s Brexit proposals have been rejected by the EU leaders and it is likely that the UK will not have any deal with the EU. The prospects of any deal are as highly bleak after the Salzburg EU summit.
The EU leaders unanimously rejected May’s Brexit proposals at the EU summit in Austria. They also reaffirmed their support for Ireland’s insistence on backstop at the border.
The Summit was declared to be closed by Donald Tusk the President of the European Council. He explicitly announced that Chequers proposal by May is unacceptable to the EU. Although the plan has some positive elements in its present form, he added.
The rejection of the Chequers proposal has been happily welcomed by the tough Brexit camp. The UK media reported the result as humiliating and catastrophic for May. This also weakens her ahead of the conference of the Conservative Party, as quoted by the Irish Times.
However, May has given hints that she will bring forth fresh Brexit proposals in the weeks ahead. Meanwhile, the Irish sources have reported that nothing substantial can be expected. This is until the Tories conference is held at this month end.
It increasingly becomes clear that the UK will not have any deal with the EU. The exit of the UK out of the European Union is scheduled in March 2019. Meanwhile, the Government of Ireland has enhanced its preparations for the Brexit.
The Ireland Foreign Minister Simon Coveney informed the Cabinet that details of contingency plan for Brexit will now be put forth regularly. These proposals are likely to cost 10s of millions of Euros apart from staff and other costs.
