The government of Malta set a new record by issuing 28,000 work permits in 2023. The country also issued 41,927 resident permits to non-EU citizens, ten times more than the EU average. Most of the resident permits were issued to foreign workers from non-EU countries.

Malta Work Permit Fee Hike
 

The Malta government announced a fee hike for the work permit application fee in 2024. Non-EU workers must pay a fee of €300 to apply for a Malta Work Permit. The increase in work permit fee applies to the renewal applicants as well.

As of 2023, India, Belarus, Ukraine, and Turkey account for the majority of resident permit beneficiaries at the EU level. Family reunification is one of the major reasons for resident permits being issued. 986,453 resident permits were issued for family reasons, accounting for 26.4% of the total resident permits granted at the EU level.
