Even as the Australian government announced a slew of changes to obtain its citizenship, the FECCA (Federation of Ethnic Communities Councils of Australia) are of the view that Australia should reach out to immigrants rather than sideline them.
SBS quotes Joe Caputo, FECCA chairperson, as saying that their country should enable and allow migrants to integrate into the Australian society instead of making it tougher for them by putting roadblocks in front of them.
He said as foreigners desire to be involved and to participate, making it tougher would not help in improving Australia further.
Caputo said that creating opportunities and allowing people to get involved is the custom of Australia, which is why it is one of the world’s most successful multicultural nations.
He also said that no particular community should be targeted or ostracised.
Caputo said that most of the new arrivals in their country are totally focusing on their work in order to ensure that they get along in the changed landscape.
