Indians have overtaken Bangladeshis to once again become the largest expat community in Oman. There are 664,227 Indians in Oman as compared to 663,618 Bangladeshis, as per data from NCSI. These numbers are as of October 2018.
In December 2017, there were 688,226 Indians and 692,164 Bangladeshis residing in Oman. Among the Indian population, there were 48,115 females and the rest were males. Only 28,335 were female in the Bangladeshi population.
The drop in the number of Bangladeshi workers is due to the fact that Oman has stopped granting visas to people who come to the country to work. This move was introduced in September 2016 by the Royal Oman Police, as per The Times of Oman. This was an effort to reduce the number of unskilled expats in the country.
Oman is currently focusing on cutting down the number of unskilled workers in the country. This has led to a reduction in numbers of both Indian and Bangladeshi expats.
There was a 3.8% decrease in Indian expats between October 2017 and October 2018. The number of Bangladeshi expats went down by 4.4% during this period. Pakistani expat population also fell by 6.9% from 234,163 to 219,901.
Shahidul Rafique, who works as an Accountant in Oman, said that many of his colleagues were asked to leave. Sunil Prabhu, a doctor in Oman, said that his field is still attracting expats.
Specialized occupations continue to draw expats to Oman. The same, however, cannot be said for the others.
Oman is currently trying to reduce its dependence on foreign workers. The country is trying to bring more Omanis into the workforce.
Indian expats in Oman represent a larger skilled workforce and hence the community is bigger than the others. As Oman introduces visa restrictions, companies are looking for a skilled workforce. India has a large skilled workforce due to its population and size.
