If you want to travel to New Zealand, you will now need an online authorization as per new Govt. rules.

With effect from 1st October 2019, people travelling to New Zealand need to apply for the New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA). Almost 100,000 tourists have applied for the NZeTA since it was introduced.

Here is all that you need to know about the new Tourist Visa in New Zealand.

Who needs the NZeTA?

If you hold the passport of a visa waiver country, you will need to have an approved NZeTA before you can visit New Zealand. This includes children and transit passengers.

However, if your country does not have a visa waiver agreement with New Zealand, you will need to obtain a Tourist/Visitor Visa.

You can apply for the NZeTA online. It may get approved in as less as 10 minutes or within 72 hours.

Who does not need an NZeTA?

If you hold an Australian or New Zealand passport, you do not need an NZeTA to visit New Zealand. Permanent Residents of Australia and New Zealand also do not need an NZeTA.

How much does an NZeTA cost?

You can download the free NZeTA app from Google Playstore or the Apple Store. The NZeTA will cost 9 NZD on the app and 12 NZD if you apply for it through the INZ website.

Travellers will also need to pay 35 NZD for the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy. This fee was introduced in July and is used to protect New Zealand’s tourist spots, conservation, infrastructure and systems.

The IVL is charged to tourists who stay in New Zealand for less than 12 months. It is expected to raise more than 450 million NZD in the next five years.

If you are an Australian citizen or Permanent Resident, you do not need to pay the IVL.

Why was the NZeTA created?

Iain Lees-Galloway, Immigration Minister, said that the NZeTA plays an important role in strengthening New Zealand’s border security. New Zealand receives millions of visitors every year from over 60 visa waiver countries. The NZeTA would provide more information about these visitors before they enter the country bringing the country’s border in tune with international best practices.
