Leo Varadkar, the 38-year-old politician who is the son of an Indian immigrant will replace the outgoing leader Taoiseach Enda Kenny as the new Prime Minister of Ireland after winning the final contest for the leadership of Fine Gael. He is all set to become the Prime Minister after he emerged victorious as the leader of the ruling party in Ireland, as quoted by The Guardian.
The victory of Leo Varadkar is another major step taken by the Ireland in promoting equality in the nation. The contest for the leadership of the ruling Fine Gael party was held after the outgoing Ireland Prime Minister Enda Kenny declared his resignation to the post.
Apart from becoming the first Prime Minister of Ireland born to Indian immigrant, Leo Varadkar will also become the youngest Prime Minister of Ireland as well as the first leader of the nation hailing from the background of an ethnic minority.
He is all set to be confirmed by the Ireland Parliament once it resumes session later this month. Varadkar had to face a more tough competition than was expected from his rival Simon Coveney in the elections held for the leadership of the Fine Gael party.
Currently the Housing Minister of Ireland, Varadkar is immensely popular with the grassroots of the party.
