IRCC to hire 1,250 employees to bring speed to Canada immigration

Canada Immigration Minister Sean Fraser stated that IRCC is hiring 1,250 employees who will help in reducing the backlog of the pending applications. The new employees will also help in reducing the processing times of the applications.

Fraser said that a proper immigration system will support the future of the communities. It will also allow the industries to invite candidates to work in Canada. New business opportunities will also be opened which will help in the growth of the industries and they will remain competitive.

Reasons of hiring new employees

Sean Fraser has made different announcements in April 2022 which led IRCC to recruit new employees. These announcements include the following:

  • Resumption of the all-program Express Entry draws in July
  • A temporary policy was made for the international graduates to stay longer in Canada. The visa of these graduates was on the verge of expiry.
  • Temporary public policy was made to allow the individuals having a visitor visa to apply for work permits till the end of February 2023.
  • Changes were made in the policy for the individuals who have applied for permanent residence in Canada. This policy was made to allow temporary residents to change their status to permanent residents.
  • The economy of the country is growing at a fast pace in comparison to the speed at which employers are hiring foreign nationals.

Canada facing the challenge of backlog

In mid-July 2022, the backlog of the applications increased up to 2.62 million. In the first week of June 2022, the backlog was 2.39 million. The crises in Afghanistan and Ukraine are another reason for the increase of backlog.

Canada launched Canada-Ukraine Authorization for Emergency Travel on March 17 for inviting Ukrainians. The latest figure of the applications is 495,929 out of which, approval has been given to 204,793 on August 17.

By recruiting new employees, IRCC has a hope of processing 80 percent of the applications.

Number of candidates to be invited in 2022

Last year, Canada has welcomed 406,025 permanent residents. In the past seven months of 2022, Canada welcomed 275,000 permanent residents. IRCC has plans to welcome 463,250 new permanent residents by the end of 2022.

The number of work permits issued in 2022 is 349,000 by the end of July. These work permits include 220,000 open work permits which allow the permit holders to work anywhere in Canada. Regarding the study permits, Canada has finalized almost 360,000 study permits from Jan 1 to July 31, 2022.
