Indo-American Rita Baranwal has been chosen by Trump for US Nuclear Energy Department’s top administrative position. Ms. Rita has been nominated to be the Assistant Secretary of Energy in the US Department of Energy.
Baranwal is serving as the GAIN - Gateway for Accelerated Innovation in Nuclear initiative’s Director at present. Her nomination needs to be confirmed by the US Senate. Upon this, Ms. Rita will lead the powerful Office of Nuclear Energy as the Assistant Secretary of Energy. She will also be responsible for the nuclear technology R&D of the Department. It will also be her responsibility to manage the nuclear technology infrastructure of the department, as quoted by the Times of India.
Earlier, Baranwal had served as the Technology Development & Application Director at Westinghouse. She was also the Materials Technology Manager at Bechtel Bettis. Here, the Indo-American led the R& D for US naval reactors in nuclear fuel materials. She has obtained Materials Science and Engineering BA from MIT. Baranwal has also secured a Doctoral degree from the University of Michigan.
Ms. Rita has also served on diverse advisory boards. These include UC Berkeley's Nuclear Engineering Department and Materials Research Laboratory at MIT.
Trump has recently signed in to law the Act for Nuclear Energy Innovation Capabilities. This will accentuate the development of advanced reactors in the US. The law also removes certain tech and financial barriers obstructing nuclear innovation in the US.
The Indo-American nominated for the top post said that the US nuclear sector is equipped to lead the world for deploying innovative nuclear technologies. This is for supplying urgently required vast clean energy both globally and domestically, she added.
