The H4 Visa of the US is granted to spouses of the H1B Visa holders. Indians account for 93% of all the H4 Visas, said Mr S Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India, addressing the Rajya Sabha on Thursday.
Rajya Sabha member K J Alphons asked whether the US plans to prevent spouses of H1B Visa holders from working in the US? A move like this would affect over half-a-million spouses in the country.
Answering the query, Mr Jaishankar said that the H4 EAD Visas was introduced in 2015 by the Obama Govt. This allowed certain H4 Visa holders to work in the US. Today, Indians account for almost 93% of all H4 EADs issued by the US.
Mr Jaishankar further added that there is a controversy surrounding the continuity of theH4 EAD. However, the program still continues at present. A court order has asked the EAD program to be continued; however, the Trump Govt. has said that they plan to review the same soon.
Syed Nasir Hussain, Congress Member, asked if the US had disqualified seven Indian IT companies from applying for the H1B Visa.
Answering this query, Mr Jaishankar said that there was no such thing. Even though the rejection rate for the H1B Visa has increased, no Indian IT company has been disqualified by the US. Mr Jaishankar further added that the rejection rate has not just gone up for India but for other countries as well. He further added that the seven IT companies in question had got 3,828 new H1B Visas and 15,230 renewed H1B Visas.
Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta asked about India’s position in regards to Work Visas and immigration of Indians overseas.
Mr Jaishankar answered saying that India is in talks with the US Govt. and the Members of the Congress. India is trying to persuade them that tapping into the Indian talent pool is of mutual benefit for both countries.
