Indian tech talents are quitting the US Silicon Valley for “Maple Valley” – Canada. They are being pushed out by a less friendly US Government as well as the living costs. These are now arriving in large numbers to Canada where technology jobs vacancies are predicted to reach 200,000 by 2020.
“Maple Valley” Canada is making all efforts to attract the immigrants in the tech sector that are being discouraged by the state of affairs in the US. The starting premise in the “Maple Valley” is quite promising. Canadian city Toronto by now has AI - Artificial Intelligence expertise and a range of enterprising firms. This includes the storytelling platform with 65 million readers – Wattpad, as quoted by the Economist. It gained extra tech jobs than Washington DC, Seattle and San Francisco combined in 2017.
Ottawa has the publicly traded $ 14 billion valued e-commerce firm Shopify. One more AI hotbed Montreal has a lab co-started by Yoshua Bengio - Element AI. He is an expert in deep learning. It also has fresh labs launched by Samsung and Facebook.
What can influence a software developer to leave a good job in the US Silicon Valley and sunshine in California for wintry skies in Toronto? Vikram Rangnekar who was born in India and studied in the US said that the triggers were curbs on immigrant tech workers with H-1B Visa. Taking long holidays or starting firms is being discouraged, he added. Additionally, it appeared that he would have to wait for 20 years to obtain the Green Card needed to settle down.
Increasing anti-immigrant outlook under President Trump also was of no help. It is 2 years now for Vikram in the “Maple Valley” and he feels that he made the right decision. I did not want to spend the best years of my life and career on a restricted visa, he adds.
