Around 100 Indian H-1B visa holders along with their dependents appealed to the US lawmakers for clearance of huge backlog of their US Green card applications. The US green cards or Permanent Residency is offered by the US based on nation-wise quote system. Under the provisional work permits approved by the US, Indian applicants account for the largest intake for any nation annually.
The campaign for appealing over the Green Cards for Indian H-1B visa holders was organized by Skilled Immigrants in America. Leaders of the association said that the current speed of approvals is dismal. Given the current processing of applications, it could take 70 years to clear the existing backlog of applications, said the leaders.
One million Green cards are approved by the US every year, as quoted by The Hindu. However, only 1, 40, 000 are based on employment with India’s share capped at 7%.
Harshit Chatur one of the leaders of the SIIA said that many lawmakers and officials were shocked to learn about the situation. The reason is that many of them are not aware of the finer aspects of the challenges faced by the applicants.
The President of SIIA Anirban Ghose said that Indians are continually contributing to the US society and economy since their arrival. It is unfortunate that they are forced to become a underprivileged section of the society.
Mr. Ghose said that these applicants of US Green cards are just a job loss away for the exit from the US. Even the basic aspiration of being treated equally in the society of residence is becoming impossible, he added. This is in the situation wherein they are active contributors to the society, said Ghose.
