The new Kuwait visa renewal rule is slated to hit Indian engineers in the nation especially from Kerala state. As per the rule, overseas engineers in Kuwait cannot renew their Work Visas till the time they obtain a NOC from KSE - the Kuwait Society of Engineers. This will be another jolt to the economy of Kerala that is dependent on overseas remittances. It is already affected by the downslide in nations in West Asia and rapid rate of job market localization in them.
It has been estimated that there are around 18,000 immigrant Indian engineers employed in Kuwait. A large number of these are believed to be from Kerala, as quoted by the New Indian Express. The new Kuwait visa renewal rule stipulates that NOC will be granted by KSE only upon verification of credentials from the college of graduation of the professionals. This implies that most of them may not be able to obtain renewals of their visas.
The KSE adopts the NBA - National Bureau of Accreditation list and not from the AICTE - the All Indian Council of Technical Education. Department of Non-Resident Keralites Affairs NORKA ROOTS Chief Executive Officer Harikrishnan Namboothiri K said that the government is aware of the situation’s gravity. We have also received large numbers of petitions from diverse associations. The matter has already been discussed with the Kuwait Indian Embassy, he added.
The CEO of NORKA ROOTS further elaborated that this is a policy decision of the Government of Kuwait. It has to be pursued through the Central Government level, added Namboothiri. N Rajkumar Chairman of Institution of Engineers-India Kerala State Centre that IEI will take up this issue with KSE. It has already been discussed at our National Council. The MOU between KSE and IEI is due for renewal, he added.
