India welcomed 10 million tourists in 2019

India welcomed almost 10 million tourists in 2019. Between January and November, tourists coming to India spent over Rs. 188,364 crores. Compared to 2018, this accounted for a 3.2% increase in 2019.

The increase in the number of tourists may be attributed to various government schemes and easy access to e-Visas. Almost one-fourth of all tourists that visited Indian in 2019 arrived on an e-Visa. 2.5 million tourists came to India on an e-Tourist Visa, which increased by 24% compared to the previous year.

The Indian Govt. launched a one-month e-Tourist Visa and a 5-year duration Visa. The Govt. also cut down the application fee on e-Visas. The cost of a one-month e-Visa is now between $10 and $25.

The Tourism Ministry said that Foreign Exchange Earnings were Rs 188,364 crores between January and November 2019. During the same period in 2018, the earnings were Rs 175,407 crore. Thus, 2019 registered an increment of 7.4% over the previous year.

The Ministry also said that the Indian Govt. spent Rs 6875 crore to improve the infrastructure of tourism in India. The Govt. launched more than 100 projects under:

  • The Swadesh Darshan Scheme, and
  • The National Mission on Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual HeritageAugmentation Drive (PRASHAD) scheme

The Govt. is implementing these project all over India to develop pilgrimage destinations and other tourist attractions.

India ranked 34th in the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Index climbing up thirty places in 2019. In contrast, India ranked 65th in 2013.

The Indian Govt. also introduced the Tax Refund for Tourists scheme in the budget session for 2019-20. The new scheme allows foreign tourists to spend more in India.

The Tourism Ministry said that the tourism sector in India holds the potential to boost the Indian economy. The tourism sector can also increase foreign exchange earnings and also create a large number of job opportunities at various levels.
