Abstract: The funding of scholarships is to be reviewed for Indian students studying in international academic institutes. The scholarships are affiliated with certain Indian agencies. The ministries involved have also started to analyze the post-education employment of the students awarded the government scholarships.

Highlights: The Indian Central Government has cautioned the union ministries to analyze the funding of scholarships for Indian students studying abroad. The Central Government believes some students, while pursuing their academics, project an unfavorable perception on international platforms.

The decision regarding the continuation of their scholarship would be taken based on their feedback from the ministries.

Growth in of number of Indian students awarded scholarship

The number of students awarded scholarships has been increasing over the years. In 2015-16, 19 scholarships were awarded to students traveling abroad for their post-graduation studies and research. The number of students availing the scholarship increased to 63 by 2019-20 and 123 by 2021-22.

Ministries Involved

One of the ministries reviewing its scholarships is the Ministries of Social Justice & Empowerment and the Ministry of Tribal Affairs. It offers NOS or National Overseas Scholarship.

The students eligible for the scholarship are from socially-disadvantaged and low-income sections. The ministry offers centrally sector sanctioned scholarships for Indian students wanting to study abroad.

The scholarships sponsor the students to access quality education from reputed institutes abroad. More than 150 students are awarded scholarships to study abroad by the Indian Government every year.

Tracking of future plans of Indian students

The ministerial sources have confirmed that they will contact the students who have availed and discuss their plans. This action would help them to ensure the required and apt settlement'.

The NOS scheme requires the students who have availed of its scholarship funding to return to India within two years of completing the course. The Government can pursue the follow-up, as the scholarship guideline states.
