Pramila Jayapal the India-origin US Congress member has been ranked fifth on the Politico Power List for 2018. She has been termed as the House leader who has assumed the mantle of leading resistance. Ms. Jayapal is the only India-origin US national to figure in the power list of Politico.
The Politico magazine has highlighted 18 leaders from different walks of life. This includes politics, humanitarian and other fields. These are poised to have it a big year in 2018, quoted the magazine.
52-year-old India-origin US Congress member has been described as a fast-rising star Democrat and a resolute critic of US President Trump. She has assumed the responsibility of leading the resistance of the House, added the Politico, as quoted by the NDTV.
Ms. Jayapal has served as the first Vice Chairperson of the Progressive Caucus of the Congress. She has worked as an unrelenting champion of immigration reforms and civil rights at the Capitol Hill. These views were expressed by Ro Khanna Republican House member and fellow freshman to the magazine.
The latest crusades include legislative repulse against threats of ending of Temporary Protected Status for thousands of Salvadorans and Haitians by the US President. She led the legislative campaign to permit these overseas immigrants to apply for PR. This was in the case if they could prove facing severe adversities if they returned home.
Robert Cruickshank of the Democracy for America said that Ms. Jayapal is a groundbreaker. He is also one of the constituency members of Pramila Jayapal. Cruickshank added that she has placed herself as a crucial player in the future for the Democratic Caucus in the US Congress.
Ms. Jayapal has rarely backtracked from a challenge said Politico regarding the first India-origin woman US Congress member.
