The Prime Minister of Italy Paolo Gentiloni has said that immigration must be the top priority for the EU. He added that Italy has tried hard to manage immigration from Asia, the Middle East, and Africa. This is a phenomenon for a long-term and EU must offer top priority, added Gentiloni.
The Italian PM elaborated that the nation has put forth crucial efforts but immigration is not a passing event. This will remain for decades to come in the future, he added. The Italian Premier was addressing the media after his meeting with Klaus Werner Iohannis the President of Romania.
Immigration is needed for assisting the economic development of the nation said Gentiloni. It must, however, be prevented from becoming an origin of fear and insecurity, he added, as quoted by the New Indian Express.
Klaus Werner Iohannis the President of Romania appreciated the effective and wise Italian immigration policies. It has also achieved extraordinary good results in curbing Mediterranean immigration, added Iohannis.
Italy is the key point of entry for boat immigrants from Africa and Europe. More than 600,000 immigrants by boat have reached the nation through the Mediterranean after 2014. This has strained the reception facilities of Italy severely.
The Italian government is assisting in the training of coastguards of Libya in intercepting Mediterranean immigrants’ boats. It also initiated conduct code for charity rescue boats. Enhanced support from other EU nations that are reluctant to accept refugees has also been sought by the nation.
By 2017 end, just 32, 000 refugees had been relocated to other nations out of the total 120, 000 refugees in Italy and Greece. This was under the compulsory quotas agreed at the 2015 EU summit.
