Canada Some of the immigrants arriving in Canada might face troubles in finding a job though they possess several years of work experience, top academic credentials, and references from renowned firms. Program Director at the Central Vancouver Island Multicultural Society in Nanaimo, B.C Robert Dawkes has said that one must be able to differentiate between the hard skills necessary to be employed in Canada and the soft skills that are required to gel with the workplace culture in Canada. Elaborating on these soft skills Dawkes added that immigrants must possess communication and language skills, leadership skills, time management, conflict resolution, the ability to work as a part of a team and the ability to do things in the ‘Canadian’ manner, as quoted by the Times of India. Luckily for immigrants, Canada has formal training opportunities for soft skills through workshops, programs, courses and classes that are offered by educational institutions as well as Immigrant settlement and multicultural agencies. Immigrants arriving in Canada can avail these training or classes for soft skills that will help them to appreciate the cultural differences and the difference in the manner of communication at the new country, said Dawkes. Apart from this, there are also soft skill training programs in Canada that will assist newly arrived immigrants to understand the style of performance appraisal at workplaces in Canada and will impart them tools and techniques to hone their skills for marketing themselves in the job market. Academic Director at the Business Edge Ann Armstrong has said that their training programs facilitate newly arrived immigrants to appreciate the workplace culture in Canada. They are not trained to lose their identity and gain a Canadian but on the other hand to bring out the best as individuals and appreciate the cultural differences that they would have to address at the place of work, explains Ann Armstrong. An immigrant from Romania who arrived in Toronto Cosmin Pocanschi has said that these soft skill training classes helped him to learn to communicate in a better way, to network and increased his confidence. He compared Business Edge to a launch pad that assists newly arrived immigrants with necessary soft skills to achieve their goals.
