SAT or ACT as requirements for admission

Harvard and Caltech plan to reintroduce a new policy for students looking for admissions in 2025. For several years, these tests were optional for students. Elite schools like Dartmouth, Yale, and Brown all said it is good to bring back testing as it allows talented students from underprivileged backgrounds to be recognized as likely to succeed at the schools.

Hopi Hoekstra, dean of Harvard’s Faculty of Arts and Sciences, said, “We know that talent is universal, but opportunity is not.” He said, “We believe in strengthening our ability to find the best students with this change.”

The oldest and richest US college, Harvard, said, “Students' test scores are reviewed with other information about an applicant’s experiences, talents, skills, and contributions to their communities.

Benefits of Test requirements

The tests help identify talented students, giving colleges more context about student profiles from rural backgrounds than those from high schools. These scores also help to analyze a student’s academic competence for college work.
