The US issued 446,000 F-1 student visas in 2023

Around 446,000 F-1 student visas were issued by the US in 2023 and 411,000 F-1 student visas were issued in 2022. This makes an 8.5% increase in the year 2023 compared to 2022. Indian students received a total number of 130,839 F-1 student visas in 2023. This was the second successive year where Indians received more US student visas.

 

According to the US Embassy, every year more than 2 lakh Indian students desire pursue higher education in the US. Students from other countries wish to study Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) courses.

 

What is an F1 visa?

An F-1 visa is a non-immigrant visa that allows students to enter the US provinces and attend a university or college, elementary school, high school, language training program, seminar, or other academic programs. Indian students holding an F-1 visa can undergo optional practical training (OPT), pre or post-completion of their graduate studies in STEM for up to 12 months. Students can apply for another year of optional practical training when looking for a secondary education degree at a higher level.

 

Why study in the US?

The US has the world’s best universities with high academic standards and strict practical training. Pursuing an education in the US is expensive for Indian students, but the price varies depending upon the degree program, location, type of university. Students who hold F-1 visas can work with their full-time academic commitment to make a living, they can work on-campus for up to 20 hours per week. F-1 visa is valid for 5 years, students can switch or transfer their academic programs during this time.

Revised rules of an F-1 visa

The USCIS announced a revision of an F-1 visa on September 2022.

 

  • USCIS announced to extend student’s retention period in the US and enhance processing efficiency.
  • Students who pursuing studies in STEM or its associated modules can opt for an additional 24 months extension for their OTP program with F-1 visa.
  • Students can search for an employer who are willing to sponsor their work visas before the expiry date of F-1 visas.
  • A student on an F-1 visa can apply for an H-1B work visa by filling out Forms I-140, I-129, and I-765 for Employment Authorisation and Form I-907 for Requesting Premium Processing Service.
  • Under the new revised rules, the USCIS will take 15 calendar days to process the applications.
