US Green Card

Migrant professionals in the USA are facing a new challenge. Their wait for the Green Card is delaying way too much, making them concerned. The issue is already causing concern as it could reduce the number of professionals in many areas of the country.

US immigration thus takes a hit with concerned migrants looking for better options. Countries like Canada are already offering better chances for PR visas to professionals. The problem affects Indian doctors serving in the USA most. These doctors chose to work in under-served areas for a J-1 waiver. They hoped to qualify for Green Card after 3 years of service. They now face at least a decade long wait for permanent resident status.

The rate of those who migrate to the USA from India is generally high. Currently, there are around 300,000 migrants queued up for the Green Card. These skilled professionals have done commendable service in America. They invest in America and pay taxes. But the current situation is prompting many to make bold decisions.

Considering this issue, there are discussions on maintaining country caps for Green Card. Many argue that Green Card eligibility should be available to all migrants. But the counterargument suggests that caps on the allotment will protect diversity. This applies more to job-based Green Cards.

Indians and Chinese contribute the most to immigration to the USA. Many of them have even involved themselves in establishing Fortune 500 companies.

The House of Representatives passed the H.R. 1044 bill. The bill is called the “Fairness for high-skilled immigrants Act of 2019”. The bill raises the limit for each country on immigrant family visas to 15% from 7%. This calculation is on the total number of visas available in the year. The bill also lifts the 7% cap for immigrant visas based on employment.

But soon, an opposing bill to the H.R. 1044 - the S. 2019, got introduced. It’s called the BELIEVE Act, short for “Backlog Elimination, Legal Immigration, and Employment Visa Enhancement Act”.

The Indian migrants in the USA are working on protecting their own and their family’s future. It reiterates the value of prospects with the Green Card.
