Germany tightens border checks to prevent Coronavirus spread

The European Union decided not to suspend the Schengen Agreement despite Italy being among the worst-hit countries by the Coronavirus outbreak. Hence, as a preventive measure, member states of the European Union have tightened border checks to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus outbreak.

Germany has decided to impose stricter border checks to stop the entry and spread of the Coronavirus. Germany demands that citizens of South Korea, Italy, Japan and Iran, nations worst-hit by the Coronavirus, first to declare their health status.

Tougher rules have also been imposed on the railways after the number of Coronavirus cases in Germany touched 90. The German federal police have also intensified border patrols.

As part of the new preventive measures, Germany has also cancelled the ITB Tourism Trade Fair. The fair would have brought in 160,000 visitors to Berlin. Switzerland has also cancelled the Geneva Motor Show as the country has temporarily banned gatherings of more than 1,000 people at a time.

The number of Coronavirus cases in Germany is on the rise. Heinsberg, the German municipality near the Dutch border has also recorded 35 cases. However, the authorities have yet not put in a blanket quarantine.

The number of Coronavirus cases around the globe has reached 90 thousand. The outbreak has claimed more than three thousand lives. Germany has recorded 79 cases of Coronavirus all across the country. Thankfully, there have been no deaths due to the virus so far in Germany.

Italy has been the worst affected country in Europe with the death toll crossing twenty. The country has locked down one town in Veneto and ten in Lombardy to prevent the spread. 50,000 residents from these towns have been prohibited from leaving the towns. Authorities in Italy have order public gathering places like restaurants, bars and discos to close as a precautionary measure.
